Tragic End to Young Love: Couple Jumps Off 50-Foot Bridge in Deoband While Fleeing Police
Saharanpur | May 21, 2025 : A heartbreaking turn of events unfolded today in Deoband, Saharanpur, when a young couple, allegedly fleeing from police, jumped off a 50-foot high bridge. The incident resulted in the tragic death of the young woman, while the man, identified as Harshit Tyagi, sustained serious injuries.
According to sources, Harshit had eloped with his girlfriend on May 12, defying social and caste norms. The girl, reportedly from an upper-caste family, belonged to a community that strongly opposed the relationship. Her family had filed a kidnapping complaint against Harshit, prompting a police search that eventually tracked the couple to Rudrapur in Uttarakhand, where they had been hiding.
On the day of the incident, the girl’s father had allegedly lured Harshit back to Deoband under the pretext of reconciliation and discussion. However, once the couple arrived, the police reportedly began following them. Feeling cornered and terrified of arrest, the couple took a desperate and fatal step, leaping off the bridge in an attempt to escape.
The girl succumbed to her injuries on the spot, while Harshit was rushed to a nearby hospital by local authorities. He is currently undergoing treatment under police supervision.
The tragedy has once again cast a harsh spotlight on the deep-rooted caste divisions and societal pressures that continue to plague inter-caste relationships in many parts of India. While the police are treating the incident as a suicide attempt linked to abduction charges, human rights activists are calling for a deeper investigation into the social and familial coercion that may have driven the couple to such a drastic decision.
Local residents expressed shock and sorrow at the incident, with many questioning whether timely intervention and open dialogue could have prevented the loss of a young life.
As investigations continue, the case serves as a grim reminder of the tragic consequences that love across caste lines can still provoke in contemporary India.
