India’s first CDS, General Bipin Rawat, passed away after an Airforce Mi17 helicopter crashed near Ooty in Tamil Nadu.
General Bipin Laxman Singh Rawat was born in Uttarakhand in 1958. His father, Lt Gen Laxman Singh Rawat, was also in the Army. Inspired by his father, he joined the NDA. He was appointed to the post on 30 December 2019.
After the NDA, General Rawat joined the Indian Military Academy, where he was awarded the ‘Sword of Honour’.During his tenure in the Army, which began in 1978, he handled operations in Jammu and Kashmir, the LAC and the Northeast.
He also played a critical part in the 2015 Myanmar Surgical Strike.
His 4-month leadership during United Nations operations in the Republic of Congo – heading The MONUSCO Brigade – was hailed as critical in stabilising that country.
