Dhruv Tyagi Assault Case Sparks Outrage: Tyagi Community Gathers in Large Protest Outside Ghaziabad Police Commissioner’s Office

Ghaziabad : Tensions escalated in Ghaziabad today as hundreds from the Tyagi community rallied outside the Police Commissioner’s office, demanding justice for Dhruv Tyagi, a student of IMS College, who was brutally assaulted by masked assailants on May 15 near the gates of Hi-Tech Institute. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, has triggered widespread anger and calls for stronger legal action.
The Assault and Its Fallout
Dhruv Tyagi, a resident of Tyagi Nagar, Hapur, was allegedly attacked with sticks and rods by a group of masked individuals, leaving him critically injured. He remains under intensive medical care. Following a complaint by his brother Uday Tyagi on May 16, a case was registered at Wave City Police Station under lighter sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita).
As videos of the assault, hospital images of Dhruv, and a copy of the FIR went viral, community members accused the police of downplaying the gravity of the incident. The delay in charging the accused with attempted murder fueled resentment, leading to a full-scale protest.

Tyagi Community Mobilizes
On May 19, the All India Tyagi Brahmin Sabha announced a gherao (siege) of the Police Commissioner’s office. By early morning on May 20, a sea of protestors, led by District President Manoj Tyagi and Mahanagar President Puneet Tyagi, had gathered at the police headquarters.
Prominent figures such as Mangeyram Tyagi of Kutubpur, lawyers Tejveer Tyagi and Shailendra Tyagi, and councillors Manoj and Amit Tyagi, joined forces, alleging police negligence and failure to apply appropriate sections of law. Protesters claimed that the accused were pressuring the victim’s family for a compromise and that the current legal framework would benefit the assailants.
Swift Police Action Follows Public Pressure
In response to the rising public outcry, the police intensified their investigation. Upon reviewing Dhruv Tyagi’s medical reports, additional serious charges under Sections 109(1) and 118(3) of the BNS were added.
Later the same day, Wave City Police arrested five accused –Sumit Sangwan, Nakul Sangwan, Shyam Dhama, Sujal Gautam, and Ansh Yadav, near Usmangarhi Dasna based on CCTV footage and intelligence inputs.
During interrogation, the assailants confessed to attacking Dhruv due to an old rivalry dating back a year. Sumit and Nakul, both BBA second-year students at IMS and cousins, admitted to holding a grudge and orchestrating the ambush.
Protesters Demand Accountability
Despite the arrests, Tyagi leaders demanded:
- FIR be amended to include attempt to murder.
- Investigation into the role of Wave City Police Station in-charge.
- Assurance of no coercion or compromise on the victim’s family.
- Timely and strict legal proceedings against all accused.
A Community United
The peaceful yet powerful demonstration reflected the collective determination of the Tyagi community. Leaders vowed to continue their movement until Dhruv Tyagi receives full justice and the case sets a precedent against caste-based or politically motivated mishandlings.
As the investigation progresses, Ghaziabad watches closely, hoping that the rule of law prevails over influence, delay, or indifference.
