CBI Nabs CGST Inspector in Ghaziabad While Accepting ₹2 Lakh Bribe

Ghaziabad : In a dramatic anti-corruption operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) inspector posted in Ghaziabad while he was allegedly accepting a ₹2 lakh bribe from a local trader. The inspector had reportedly demanded ₹11 lakh to “settle” an alleged discrepancy related to Input Tax Credit (ITC) in the trader’s account.
According to officials, the deal was eventually negotiated down to ₹2 lakh, but instead of giving in, the trader approached the CBI with a formal complaint. Acting swiftly, the CBI laid a trap to catch the officer red-handed.
As soon as the accused accepted the bribe, CBI officials moved in to apprehend him. However, the inspector attempted to flee the scene, leading to a brief but tense chase through the streets of Ghaziabad. In a desperate bid to escape, the officer rammed both a CBI vehicle and a private car before being overpowered and arrested nearly two kilometers away.
Officials confirmed that the bribe money was recovered in full from the accused at the time of arrest. Simultaneous raids are being conducted at his residence and office to uncover further evidence.
The CBI registered a formal case against the inspector on Wednesday under charges of corruption and criminal misconduct. Sources say the accused had been repeatedly harassing the trader with threats of severe action against his firm unless the bribe was paid.
“The inspector used coercion and intimidation to extract money under the guise of a tax violation,” the complainant said. “He told me things would get very difficult if I didn’t comply. That’s when I decided to take legal action.”
This arrest marks yet another case in a series of corruption crackdowns by the CBI in the region and highlights growing concerns over misuse of authority in revenue departments.
