Ashwin’s Chase for Cricketing Glory: Can He Dethrone Kumble as India’s Test Wicket King?

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s wizard of spin, stands on the brink of cricketing immortality. With 522 Test wickets to his name, Ashwin is steadily closing in on Anil Kumble’s towering record of 619 Test wickets – the most by any Indian bowler and the fourth-highest in the history of Test cricket. But can Ashwin, at 38, surpass this monumental figure and etch his name atop the Indian cricketing pantheon?

In the recently concluded Chennai Test against Bangladesh, Ashwin delivered a performance that underscored his all-round genius. With India faltering at 144-6, Ashwin displayed not only his mastery with the ball but also with the bat, crafting a sublime century (113), his sixth in Test cricket. His partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (86) turned the tide for India, and when he returned to bowl, Ashwin proved why he is one of the finest spinners in the world. His second-innings figures of 6-88, coupled with his century, marked the fourth time he has achieved the rare feat of scoring a hundred and taking five wickets in a single Test—an achievement surpassed only by the legendary Ian Botham.

Now, with 522 wickets in 101 Tests, Ashwin’s journey toward Kumble’s record is at a crucial juncture. A closer look at their respective careers reveals a fascinating comparison. At the same stage—101 Tests—Kumble had 487 wickets, while Ashwin has already surpassed that mark. This pace of wicket-taking puts Ashwin in a strong position, but the road ahead is fraught with challenges.

According to the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP), there are some 20 odd Tests in the immediate future that Ashwin could take part in, giving him ample chances to inch closer to Kumble. As Ashwin charts his path toward surpassing Anil Kumble’s record, the fixtures ahead resemble a mixed bag of possibilities and constraints. India’s cricketing calendar offers 18 Test matches by November 2025, enough on paper for Ashwin to climb the wicket-taking ladder—if he can play them all. However, just like the twists and turns of a gripping Test match, Ashwin’s road is not without its challenges.

The immediate future includes nine Tests this year : one more against Bangladesh, three at home against New Zealand, and five crucial ones on the fast-paced, unforgiving tracks of Australia. These conditions, especially the ones Down Under, may not always favor Ashwin, especially with Ravindra Jadeja in the mix. Jadeja, thanks to his superior batting prowess and handy spin bowling, is often preferred when India opts for a lone spinner outside Asia. This leaves Ashwin potentially limited to matches where the conditions suit spinners, particularly in the subcontinent.

In 2025, India is also set to play four more Tests at home—two each against West Indies and South Africa. Add to that the potential World Test Championship (WTC) final in England in 2025 and the five-Test series in England that follows. If conditions dictate just one spinner, it might reduce Ashwin’s participation significantly.
Looking beyond 2025, the subcontinent becomes more central to Ashwin’s ambitions. India’s home fixtures against Afghanistan (1 Test) and an away series against Sri Lanka (3 Tests) in mid-2026, along with the pivotal five-Test home series against Australia in early 2027, offer fertile ground for him to display his spinning wizardry. These subcontinental encounters are where Ashwin is likely to be an automatic pick, given his remarkable record on turning tracks. All told, there are 16 likely Tests in Asia for Ashwin to play by early 2027.

If he can maintain his current wicket-taking pace, the spinner could be well within striking distance of Kumble’s 619 wickets. Yet, just as in cricket, the battle is not only against opponents but against time and circumstances.

At 38 years of age, time is a competitor that grows more formidable with every passing year. Kumble himself retired shortly after his 38th birthday, but Ashwin seems prepared to battle on, like a veteran batsman eager for one last glorious knock. Ultimately, whether Ashwin will overtake Kumble or not, may rest on a few factors beyond his control. His fitness, India’s team balance, and the whims of the cricketing board will all play their part in this unfolding narrative. But if he manages to stay on the field, his genius with the ball could write a new chapter in Indian cricket, where Ashwin, much like a climber scaling the final summit, stands atop the record books, looking back at a journey defined by skill, persistence, and a deep understanding of the game.
For now, the script is still being written, but one thing is clear—Ashwin’s pursuit of Kumble’s crown is a cricketing saga rich with promise, patience, and the irresistible pull of history.
