A Sacred Debut in Dance: Anvita Jain’s Arangetram Presented by Padmashri Geeta Chandran

  • Celebrated folk singer Malini Awasthi to grace the event as Chief Guest

NEW DELHI, August 6, 2025: In a resplendent celebration of tradition, dedication, and artistic legacy, acclaimed Bharatanatyam exponent Padmashri Geeta Chandran will present the Arangetram of her disciple Anvita Jain at the Chinmaya Mission Auditorium, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi. The performance is scheduled for 6:30 PM on Friday, August 8, and will be graced by the presence of Padmashri Malini Awasthi, celebrated Indian folk singer, as the Chief Guest.

The event is hosted under the aegis of Natya Vriksha, the pioneering institution founded by Geeta Chandran that has shaped generations of Bharatanatyam dancers for over three decades.

A Journey of Devotion and Discipline

The Arangetram, literally meaning “ascending the stage” – is a significant rite of passage for every classical dancer, marking the transition from student to performer. But at Natya Vriksha, this ceremonial debut takes on deeper meaning, symbolizing a sacred artistic offering crafted with years of rigorous training and emotional surrender.

Anvita Jain, who began her Bharatanatyam journey at the age of seven, stands at the heart of this milestone moment. Under the nurturing guidance of Geeta Chandran, Anvita has not only learned the grammar and vocabulary of the classical form but also internalized its spiritual essence. She has matured into a sensitive artist, echoing the ethos of her guru through her disciplined approach, deep emotional engagement, and expressive clarity.

A Dancer with Many Facets

A student of Modern School, Barakhamba Road, Anvita balances multiple disciplines with equal fervor. Apart from her deep-rooted involvement in classical dance, she is a national-level swimmer, having represented her school in the Indian Public Schools’ Conference and other inter-school competitions. Her performances have featured in city-wide celebrations like Durga Puja at Niti Bagh, as well as on national platforms such as the CBSE Expression Series and the CBSE National Adolescent Summit 2023.

Anvita’s artistic expression is marked by grace, intellect, and resilience, a rare amalgamation of academic excellence, athletic prowess, and aesthetic sensitivity.

Legacy of Geeta Chandran and Natya Vriksha

One of the most influential cultural voices of contemporary India, Geeta Chandran is a dancer, choreographer, Carnatic vocalist, scholar, and a tireless cultural activist. Through Natya Vriksha, founded in 1991, she has championed inclusive arts education, training hundreds of students, including many from underserved communities.

Her approach to Bharatanatyam transcends performance, transforming it into a medium of storytelling, social dialogue, and spiritual enquiry. Whether exploring mythology or ecology, feminism or divinity, Geeta Chandran’s choreography is a confluence of tradition and contemporary relevance, inspiring generations to find their voice through movement.

A Gathering of Grace

The Arangetram on August 8 is poised to be an evening of cultural reverence and artistic finesse, paying tribute to the guru-shishya parampara that continues to shape Indian classical traditions. The presence of Padmashri Malini Awasthi, known for her work in preserving India’s folk music heritage, lends an added dimension of gravitas and celebration.
