Torrential Rain Triggers Traffic Chaos in Noida, Ghaziabad; Commuters Stuck for Hours

Noida/Ghaziabad : A brief but intense spell of evening rain wreaked havoc across parts of Noida and Ghaziabad on Wednesday, as commuters faced massive traffic snarls, waterlogged roads, and dangerously low visibility during peak hours. The sudden downpour, though a welcome relief from the day’s stifling humidity, exposed once again the fragile state of civic infrastructure in two of NCR’s most urbanised zones.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert at 7:30 pm, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Delhi-NCR for the next three hours. According to IMD’s bulletin, gusty winds and rainfall intensity were expected to severely impact traffic and urban mobility. While average rainfall recorded appeared modest, 4 mm in GB Nagar, 1.5 mm in Dadri, 1 mm in Ghaziabad ground reports painted a much grimmer picture.

Roads Turn to Rivers, NCR to Nightmare

Key intersections in Noida such as Ek Murti Chowk, Sector 71, and the Gaur City Mall stretch experienced near-gridlock conditions as vehicles crawled through flooded lanes. In Ghaziabad, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Rajnagar Extension Elevated Road, and Meerut Road tri-section were reduced to a slow-moving sea of red tail lights.

Deepanshu Mittal, a resident of Rajnagar Extension, said, “It usually takes me an hour to reach home from Delhi, but today it took over three hours. Visibility was reduced to barely a few metres, and flyovers were completely waterlogged.”

Another commuter, Gaurav Kumar, described how his 2-km commute near City Forest turned into a 2.5-hour ordeal. “After descending from the elevated road, the traffic simply froze. No one knew what was happening ahead,” he said, adding that even Google Maps was unable to reroute effectively due to blanket congestion across parallel roads.

Jam Below, Shelter Above

On the Meerut Road stretch near the under-construction rapid rail station, chaos peaked as bikers crowded under a foot overbridge seeking shelter. This created a bottleneck, worsening the jam and endangering pedestrian movement.

Arvind Mishra, caught in the jam, said, “The rain began suddenly and within minutes the road was submerged. I saw bikers huddling under the underpass, blocking a major part of the road. No traffic could pass for at least 30 minutes.”

Several localities, including Shastri Nagar, Hindon, and Kavi Nagar, reported ankle-deep water, which not only hampered vehicular traffic but also posed safety risks for children and elderly pedestrians.

Commuter Woes: A Daily Struggle

Commuters voiced their frustration over the lack of preparedness despite repeated monsoon warnings. “Every year, it’s the same story. Authorities wake up after the roads are flooded and traffic collapses. Where is the long-term drainage plan for these satellite towns?” questioned Meenakshi Sharma, a Rajnagar Extension resident.

The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation and Noida Authority have repeatedly come under fire for under-investment in flood management and stormwater drainage systems, especially in newly developed sectors and high-density residential pockets.

IMD’s Nowcast: What Lies Ahead

According to IMD, more such weather events are likely in the coming days. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during active rain periods, take safe shelter during lightning, and refrain from parking vehicles under low-lying flyovers.

Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call

While Wednesday’s rainfall brought temporary relief from the sweltering heat, it served as yet another reminder that climate resilience and urban planning in NCR cities still have a long way to go. Without adequate upgrades to drainage, traffic control, and emergency response mechanisms, such weather events are likely to grow more disruptive in the near future.

Residents are demanding not just advisories and alerts but action. Because for lakhs of commuters in Noida and Ghaziabad, every rain becomes a crisis waiting to unfold.
