Raj Nagar Extension: Religious Kalash Yatra Controversy on Sunday Followed by Monday Morning Altercation

Ghaziabad : A two-day sequence of events in a prominent residential society of Raj Nagar Extension, Gaur Cascades has stirred community discussions around religious freedom, administrative decision-making, and resident safety.
The first incident unfolded on Sunday morning, when a religious Kalash Yatra organized by members of the Jain community became the subject of last-minute confusion. According to a message circulated by the society’s secretary, the organizing committee had taken prior permission for the Yatra on the understanding that it would be a peaceful, small-scale procession involving 30–40 women, moving from the society’s rear gate to the nearby temple.
However, when information surfaced that a band would be accompanying the procession, the secretary briefly held the event to review the revised format and consult with the board to ensure that all residents’ convenience and security were taken into account. Before any formal resolution was reached, the organizers decided to change the route of the Yatra on their own.
Following this development, a strongly worded message from members of the Jain community was circulated, expressing deep anguish over what they termed as an “arbitrary and disrespectful” decision. The message described the incident as “an attack on religious and cultural values” .
The statement asserted that all necessary permissions had been duly taken in advance and preparations were complete. Stopping the procession at the last moment, they claimed, was unjustified and disrespectful to religious sentiments. The message emphasized that religious processions are not merely rituals but symbols of culture, faith, and social harmony.

In response, the Jain community announced a silent march (Moun Yatra) on Sunday evening, calling it a peaceful expression of dissent. The message appealed to community members to join in large numbers “to stand for respect towards religion, tradition, and communal harmony.”
“The event was meant to symbolize harmony and faith, and stopping it midway has deeply hurt our sense of religious freedom and community spirit,” said one of the residents.
Board member Anuj Rathi expressed strong disapproval, stating, “This act is unfortunate and socially unacceptable. Our society has always celebrated every festival together as one family. It is deeply disappointing that such a decision was taken by Secretory without informing the board members.”
During the silent march, residents appealed for calm and unity.
Another resident, Navneet Nain, added, “Our society has always embraced festivals of all faiths with equal respect. Such discriminatory behavior is truly disheartening and goes against the spirit of communal harmony we have built over the years.”
Later, the society’s secretary issued a clarification expressing regret for the confusion, reiterating that there was no intention to hurt religious sentiments, and taking personal responsibility for any miscommunication. He urged all residents to close the matter with mutual respect and understanding.
Residents have submitted a written complaint to the Deputy Registrar (Cooperative Societies), Ghaziabad, alleging that Secretory obstructed religious freedom, created communal tension within the society, and misused his position. The complaint further states that such arbitrary actions by him violate the society’s bylaws and are disrupting the peaceful and harmonious environment that residents have long maintained. Expressing their concern, Sanjeev Malik, Iti Singhal, and Vinod Tejwani emphasized that no such restrictions should be imposed on future religious or cultural events. Nidhi Sharma, Sanchin Singhal, Sumit Jain, Daman Jain, Chanderbhan Sharma, and several other residents also voiced strong resentment over the incident.
Monday Morning: Heated Exchange Between Residents Near Association Office and Police Complaint
In a separate and unrelated incident on Monday morning, a disagreement between two residents near the association office led to a heated exchange, drawing attention from nearby residents. According to sources, the confrontation appeared to arise over society-related matters and was recorded on the premises’ CCTV cameras.
Both parties have shared differing versions of the incident. Members of the community have expressed concern over the growing strain in interactions within the society, calling for greater transparency, mutual respect, and open dialogue to ensure a peaceful and cooperative environment.
Community members have expressed concern over both developments, emphasizing the need for transparent communication, legal recourse, and respectful dialogue to maintain peace and harmony in the residential area.
