Inspiring Change: Bhikanpur Youth Rejects ₹51 Lakh Dowry, Sets a Bold Example for Society

Bhikanpur | 28 April 2025
In a powerful and heartwarming stand against an age-old social evil, Vishwajeet Singh, son of Arun Singh KalKal of Bhikanpur village, has set a shining example for the entire society. During his engagement ceremony, Vishwajeet publicly refused a ₹51 lakh dowry offered by the bride’s family, sending a strong message against the practice of dowry and reinforcing the importance of values over wealth.

The engagement was between Vishwajeet and the granddaughter of local notable figure Ajay Pramukh. The bride’s family, represented by Shivam, son of Chaudhary Shyam Singh Ahlawat from Raikda village (under Bhopal area) in Muzaffarnagar district, had come to perform the Tilak ceremony, a traditional pre-wedding ritual. As per the ceremony, it is customary for the bride’s side to offer gifts and cash, and they had brought ₹51 lakh to present to the groom’s family.

However, just as the cash was being offered, Vishwajeet stood up and, in front of all gathered guests, respectfully but firmly declined the dowry. He stated that he did not believe in accepting money or gifts in exchange for a marriage alliance, emphasizing that marriage should be based on mutual respect, trust, and love, not financial transactions.

His action left the entire gathering emotional and proud. Many in the audience, including elders and youngsters, praised the courage and conviction Vishwajeet showed in challenging a deep-seated tradition that has often led to societal inequality and personal tragedies. The bride’s family too was visibly moved and supported Vishwajeet’s principled stand.

Speaking after the ceremony, Vishwajeet said,
“Marriage is a bond of two families, two hearts. It should never be tainted by greed or financial dealings. By rejecting dowry, I hope to inspire other youths to do the same and make our society better.”

The incident quickly became the talk of the village and surrounding areas. Community leaders, social workers, and ordinary citizens hailed Vishwajeet’s stand as a historic moment, showing that change is possible when individuals dare to act with integrity.

Residents of Bhikanpur and nearby villages believe that this act will spark broader discussions about ending dowry practices and inspire many more families to say “no” to dowry demands. Vishwajeet’s decision has set a precedent that might reshape the mindset of future generations.

In a society where dowry-related issues still persist and often lead to unfortunate incidents, Vishwajeet Singh’s bold move offers a beacon of hope and a call for collective introspection.
