Ghaziabad Shines on the Global Stage at Bloomberg Philanthropies 2025 – Innovative Waste Management Projects Gain Worldwide Recognition

Ghaziabad : Ghaziabad has made a mark on the global map for urban innovation and environmental responsibility. A three-member team representing the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) showcased two pioneering waste management initiatives at the prestigious Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge 2025, held in Colombia. The event, which brought together urban leaders and civic innovators from across 630 cities worldwide, selected only 50 cities for global recognition, Ghaziabad proudly being one of them.

The GMC delegation comprised Dr. Mithilesh (Municipal Health Officer), Narendra Kumar Chaudhary (Chief Engineer – Construction), and Taruushi, a subject expert from the municipal technical team. The trio presented two scalable and eco-friendly initiatives:

  1. Composting wet waste from high-rise societies into organic fertilizer
  2. Converting cow dung into eco-friendly paint, powered by Self Help Groups (SHGs) of local women.

Both ideas received widespread praise from countries like the USA, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and South Africa.

From Local Streets to Global Applause

The vision behind the projects is to promote decentralized waste management and community-driven sustainability. Ghaziabad’s model is already showing success on the ground — many residential societies are segregating waste, composting at source, and using the resulting manure for plantation drives. The cow dung paint project, though in the pilot stage, is being closely watched as a blueprint for rural-urban circular economy integration. The implementation plan also aligns with women’s empowerment by involving SHGs in the production process.

According to Municipal Commissioner Vikramaditya Singh Malik, these initiatives are not just about innovation but also community ownership. “We are not just aiming to win; we are aiming to transform. If the pilot proves successful, Ghaziabad stands to receive ₹10 crore in funding under the program,” he stated. The commissioner emphasized the rigorous planning by the civic body to scale these models sustainably.

Mayor’s Message Echoes Globally

Adding a personal touch to the event, Mayor Sunita Dayal sent a recorded video message that resonated strongly with the international audience. Her message highlighted Ghaziabad’s journey toward becoming a greener, cleaner city and the importance of public participation in environmental missions. The message was praised for its motivational tone and was considered a fine example of urban leadership rooted in local realities.

“The fact that Ghaziabad has been shortlisted for such a prestigious global initiative is not just an honor for the city administration but for every citizen who supports the idea of a sustainable, clean, and green Ghaziabad,” said the Mayor. She extended her best wishes to the GMC team for their exemplary representation and expressed confidence that with continued public cooperation, the city will successfully enter the final selection and secure the ₹10 crore funding.

Social Impact at the Core

At its heart, Ghaziabad’s participation isn’t just about awards and recognition — it’s about tackling core civic and social challenges. The issues of urban waste, cattle dung management, and women’s economic inclusion often fall through the cracks of mainstream governance. Ghaziabad’s approach demonstrates that with planning, pilot implementation, and grassroots engagement, even cities with infrastructural pressure can become global case studies in sustainable transformation.

The projects also address climate change, carbon footprint reduction, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals — all crucial at a time when cities are under increasing pressure to deliver environmentally conscious governance.

What’s Next?

With the pilot projects already in motion and global attention building, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation is determined to scale its initiatives. The next few months will be crucial, as successful implementation could unlock further investment, partnerships, and replication in other Indian cities.

Commissioner Malik has confirmed that departments across the civic body are working in coordination to ensure flawless execution. Meanwhile, citizen awareness drives are being launched to keep residents informed and involved.
