By Local Post Bureau | Ghaziabad | 17 June 2025

In a significant breakthrough, the Government Railway Police (GRP), Ghaziabad, has successfully arrested a notorious thief involved in a string of thefts targeting railway passengers. The accused, identified as Abhishek Hamid, son of Hamid, hails from Mughal Garden Colony, under Masuri police station limits, Ghaziabad.

The arrest marks a crucial win for authorities in their ongoing efforts to curb theft-related crimes on trains and railway premises.

🎒 Sleight of Hand on Sleeper Coaches

During interrogation, Abhishek Hamid confessed to his modus operandi: he would either board moving trains or remain seated in advance, carefully observing passenger behavior. At the slightest sign of carelessness, dozing off, unattended bags, or crowded coach transitions, he would swiftly steal valuables, mobile phones, and cash, then disembark at the next station before anyone noticed.

The suspect was caught red-handed with the following stolen items:

  • 🟡 One gold chain
  • 🟡 One gold nose ring
  • 🟡 One gold mangalsutra
  • 📱 One Redmi smartphone
  • 💰 ₹3,500 in cash

The total estimated value of the recovered items is over ₹2.5 lakh.

👮‍♂️ GRP Investigation Reveals Prior Record

According to GRP officials, Abhishek Hamid is not new to crime. His background is being examined for previous involvement in similar incidents, suggesting he may be part of a larger theft network operating across key railway routes in Uttar Pradesh and NCR.

A senior GRP officer stated:

“He was swift and strategic, exploiting peak hours and crowd confusion. We’re investigating his past and his possible links to other unsolved thefts.”

🛡️ A Wake-Up Call for Train Passengers

This incident serves as a reminder for railway passengers to remain vigilant while travelling:

  • Keep your valuables close at all times.
  • Avoid displaying expensive items openly.
  • Report suspicious behavior immediately to RPF/GRP helplines.
  • Use locks for baggage and avoid leaving bags unattended.

The GRP has also intensified patrolling and undercover surveillance on major routes and platforms, especially during night travel and festival seasons.
