Desperate Farmer Attempts Self-Immolation Outside SDM Office in Meerut
Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: In a tragic incident on Friday, a distressed farmer attempted self-immolation outside the SDM office in the Mawana Tehsil of Meerut district, protesting against the actions taken by the Forest Department regarding his land.
The farmer, identified as Jagbir from Alipur Morana, was reportedly troubled by the Forest Department’s intervention in the cultivation of his land. Frustrated and distraught, he reached the tehsil office, where he poured oil on himself and attempted self-immolation.
Witnesses and onlookers rushed to the scene upon seeing the farmer in flames, making efforts to save him. The SDM, who was present at the office, also joined in the rescue attempt. The incident caused a stir outside the SDM office.
The farmer, Jagbir, was admitted to the CHC (Community Health Center) in critical condition, suffering severe burns. Following medical attention, he has been referred to a hospital in Meerut for further treatment.
Jagbir alleges that the Forest Department wrongfully claimed his land under the guise of government property, causing significant financial loss. With 70% of his land already rendered infertile due to excessive waterlogging, the farmer was facing severe distress.
The incident sheds light on the ongoing struggles of farmers against bureaucratic actions and raises concerns about the need for effective communication and resolution of land-related disputes. The SDM office’s response to such grievances is now under scrutiny, emphasizing the urgency for a fair and prompt resolution process.
