Cracking a whip against modified silencers of motorcycles

Meerut : Cracking a whip against modified silencers of Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles to make a gunshot like sound, the Meerut Traffic Police have initiated challans drive in the city. The police are also scanning motorcycles of people who were booked in the past for the offense to check if they have again installed modified silencers.

Today at Jail Chungi the bikers have been slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000 each for using modified silencers. According to section 190(2) of the amended Motor Vehicle Act, which came into effect from October 2021, causing air and noise pollution can now attract a fine of up to ₹10,000 instead of ₹1,000 earlier under the old Act (1988).

Traffic Police said apart from issuing challans to the violators, the police will also book the mechanics for fitting modified silencers on the motorcycles under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of Indian Penal Code. The Meerut Traffic Police had initiated the drive against modified silencers.
