Clashes Erupt in Meerut Municipal Corporation Meeting Over House Tax Debate

BJP Councillor’s Statement Sparks Uproar, Resulting in Physical Altercation

Meerut: Chaos unfolded during a Meerut Municipal Corporation meeting on Saturday as clashes erupted between councillors of the Samajwadi Party, BJP, and the Bahujan Samaj Party. The turmoil allegedly began after BJP councillor Rekha Singh made a statement regarding house tax, provoking strong opposition from councillors of the other two parties and leading to violent confrontations.

The meeting took a drastic turn when discussions on house tax escalated into a full-blown physical altercation. Councillors from the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party vehemently opposed BJP councillor Rekha Singh’s statement, resulting in heated arguments and clashes.

The clashes spilled out of the Municipal Corporation House and onto the streets as councillors from different parties engaged in physical altercations, dragging each other in the process. BJP MLC Dharmendra Bhardwaj, attempting to mediate, also fell victim to the violence and was reportedly assaulted.

Police had to intervene to separate the warring councillors inside the Municipal Corporation House. BJP MLA Somendra Tomar later arrived at the scene, condemning the violence and promising action against those involved. Meerut Mayor Harikant Ahluwalia announced that a thorough investigation into the incident is underway.

As tensions escalated, all sides began pointing fingers at each other. BJP leaders claimed they were assaulted and pushed, while opposition councillors asserted that it was the BJP MLCs and workers who initiated the violence.

This incident follows a heated altercation and physical confrontation during a board meeting of the Shamli Municipal Council the day before. A video of the Shamli incident was shared by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who took a jibe at the BJP over the increasing instances of political clashes.

Authorities are now investigating the Meerut Municipal Corporation incident, examining the sequence of events and identifying the individuals involved in the violent clashes. The political landscape remains tense as parties engage in a blame game over the unfortunate incident.
