Storm Triggers Power Outage Across Meerut, Residents Endure Up to 40 Hours Without Electricity

Meerut : A severe storm and heavy rainfall that swept through Meerut earlier this week left large parts of the city in darkness, triggering widespread power outages that lasted 20 to 40 hours in several areas. The disruption paralyzed daily life and brought industrial activity to a grinding halt, resulting in multi-crore losses for local businesses and factories.

Residents across Shastri Nagar, Ganga Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, and other neighborhoods reported long hours without electricity. In some sectors, power was only restored after nearly two full days, sparking frustration and anger among the citizens.

“We had no lights, no fans, and no water for over 30 hours,” said Sushma Verma, a resident of Rajendra Nagar. “The summer heat made it unbearable, and there was no response from the electricity department.”

Local entrepreneurs and industrialists have claimed heavy losses, especially in manufacturing units and cold storage facilities. With machines idle and perishables spoiled, the estimated economic damage is said to run into crores of rupees.

“Production was halted for two days straight. We lost lakhs in delayed orders and damaged goods,” said Vinod Agarwal, owner of a small-scale textile unit in Partapur industrial area.

Citizens and business owners are now demanding accountability and a contingency plan from Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (PVVNL), the regional power distributor. However, no official statement had been issued by the company at the time of reporting.

The incident has once again raised concerns about Meerut’s aging electricity infrastructure and the city’s preparedness for seasonal storms. With monsoon just around the corner, residents fear that similar outages could become a recurring ordeal.
