It is believed that Ravana, the king of Lanka, came here with Lord Shiva in the golden age. Ravana was going to Lanka with Shiva, but in the middle of the way, he had to put God on the ground for a brief moment, after which he could not move the Bhole Baba from the ground, so Ravana pressed the Shivling with his thumb. This place became Gola Gokarnath and even today there is a thumb impression of Ravana on the Shivling.

According to Hindu beliefs, thousands of years ago there was a churning of the oceans between the gods and the demons, craving for nectar. In this churning, poison came out, which Lord Shiva drank. This made his throat blue. Neelkanth Mahadev’s temple was established at the place where Bhole Baba had drank poison.
