‘Phantom Ali’, For several years now, has taken on the role of traffic cop helping Meerut become free of traffic snarls

This 56-year-old managing traffic at a busy stretch in Meerut is not a traffic policeman. He cannot take legal action against people nor can he write them challans for traffic violations. But Farhat Ali knows how to handle rush-hour traffic with just a baton in his hand.

For those who believe that one man alone can’t bring a change, 56-year-old Farhat Ali is someone they can look up to. Farhat, popularly known as ‘ Phantom Ali’, has become the talk of the town due to his noticeable efforts to clear the traffic snarls in the city. Claiming to be a social worker, Ali goes around clearing traffic jams and illegal parking in the city. “I spend more than 18 hours of my entire day on field —managing traffic and running small ad campaigns of local shops. During his free time he doubles up as a marketing guy running pre-recorded ad jingles of small firms on his loudspeaker. He can be seen riding a modified cycle mounted with loudspeaker, sirens, batteries, microphones and lights on city roads.
