Nationwide Civil Defence Mock Drill Scheduled for May 7 Amid Rising Tensions: MHA Issues Directive to 244 Districts

New Delhi | : In a significant move aimed at strengthening national emergency preparedness, the Government of India has announced a nationwide civil defence mock drill to be held on May 7, 2025, involving 244 districts across the country. The announcement comes in the wake of escalating tensions with Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, though officials stress that the exercise is not an indication of imminent conflict.
The directive, issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), mandates comprehensive mock drills under the Civil Defence Rules, 1968, reinforcing preparedness strategies at both the administrative and citizen levels. These drills are a part of the country’s proactive civil defence infrastructure, designed to test readiness during wartime scenarios, aerial strikes, missile attacks, or large-scale emergencies.
What Will the Drill Involve?
The exercise will include:
- Mock simulations of emergency situations
- Air raid sirens and alert signals
- Evacuation drills in selected zones
- Public awareness and training sessions
- Mock response from police, fire, health, and disaster management units
Citizens in affected areas may experience temporary disruptions, including simulated blackouts, restricted movement in some zones, and test alerts via local communication networks.
“Preparedness, Not Panic”
An MHA spokesperson clarified that the mock drill is part of a long-planned civil defence readiness initiative and not a signal of war or imminent threat.
“These exercises are crucial for building awareness and resilience among citizens. The goal is to ensure that in the unlikely event of a major emergency, both the public and authorities are well-coordinated and prepared,” the spokesperson said.
What Citizens Should Do
Authorities have advised citizens to:
- Follow instructions from local civil defence and administration units
- Treat the simulations seriously and participate actively
- Avoid spreading panic or misinformation on social media
- Stay updated through official advisories and announcements
This is the first nationwide drill of this scale in recent years, reflecting a renewed emphasis on public safety and national resilience in the face of evolving geopolitical risks.
