Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College Sets New Milestone in Treating Critical Patient at Tele-ICU

Meerut : Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College, Meerut, under the leadership of Principal Dr. R.C. Gupta, continues to reach new heights in healthcare excellence. Known for its exemplary treatment across western Uttar Pradesh, the government-run medical college has once again made headlines by successfully treating a critically ill patient diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).

A Journey from Despair to Recovery

The patient, a 16-year-old girl referred to as Rakhi (name changed), had been suffering from severe difficulties in eating, swallowing, and breathing for over a month. After consulting several healthcare providers with no relief, she was admitted to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Hospital, part of Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College, under the care of Associate Professor Dr. Snehlata Verma from the Department of Medicine.

Following an extensive evaluation, including an MRI and various blood and spinal cord tests, it was confirmed that the patient was suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)—a rare and rapidly progressive autoimmune neurological disorder.

Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Tele-ICU In-Charge and Professor of Medicine Dr. Arvind Kumar explained, “GBS affects the peripheral nervous system, disrupting the body’s sensory and motor functions. It is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly targets the body’s own nerves, leading to weakness, paralysis, and difficulty in breathing.”

GBS typically starts with weakness in the lower body, gradually spreading upward. It can be triggered by diarrhea, respiratory infections, or even flu vaccinations. In severe cases, it affects muscles responsible for breathing and swallowing, necessitating advanced medical care.

Critical Care at Tele-ICU

Rakhi was admitted to the Tele-ICU in critical condition, unable to eat, chew, or breathe independently. Her condition deteriorated to the point where she required ventilator support for 15 days. Subsequently, a tracheostomy was performed to aid her recovery. Over weeks of intensive care and monitoring, her health began to improve.

Lifesaving Treatment at No Cost

The patient received costly treatments, including Intravenous Immunoglobulins (IVIG) and specialized injections, entirely free of charge under the Ayushman Bharat Health Scheme, a flagship initiative of the Government of India. The hospital provided Rakhi with comprehensive care for over a month, ensuring no financial burden on her family.

A Happy and Emotional Outcome

After more than a month in the hospital, Rakhi was finally discharged. Her family expressed deep gratitude to the hospital’s expert doctors, nursing staff, and administration for their unwavering support and exceptional care. The family also lauded the government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme, which played a vital role in covering the treatment.

Recognition and Encouragement

Principal Dr. R.C. Gupta congratulated the teams from the Departments of Medicine, Anesthesia, and Tele-ICU for their outstanding efforts in successfully treating such a complex case. He encouraged the hospital staff to continue their dedication to tackling critical illnesses and serving patients with the same zeal in the future.

The story of Rakhi’s recovery is not just a testament to the expertise and commitment of the medical staff but also a beacon of hope for patients battling life-threatening conditions.
