Inferno Strikes Ghazipur: Delhi’s Landfill Engulfed in Flames, Political Sparks Fly
Ghaziabad: A massive fire erupted at the Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi on Sunday evening, triggering concerns about the environmental and public safety implications. Officials sprung into action as the blaze engulfed the area.
“At 5:22 pm, we received reports of the fire. Fire tenders were dispatched immediately, and efforts are underway to extinguish the flames. Local authorities have been alerted,” stated a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official.
Senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials revealed that excavators were deployed to combat the fire and prevent its spread to nearby areas.
However, amidst the firefighting efforts, political blame games ensued. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the Delhi government, accusing it of failing to fulfill its promise to clear the Ghazipur landfill by December 31 last year.
This isn’t the first time such an incident has occurred at the Ghazipur landfill. In 2017, a tragic accident claimed the lives of two individuals when a portion of the garbage collapsed onto a nearby road. Similarly, three fire incidents were recorded at the site in 2022, including a prolonged blaze on March 28 that took over 50 hours to extinguish.
The Ghazipur landfill, a significant waste disposal site for the capital, has been a recurring concern due to its environmental impact and safety hazards.
