Fishing Dispute Sparks Communal Clash in Sardhana, Nine Injured

Meerut, September 17, 2025 : What began as a seemingly trivial quarrel over fishing in a village drain spiraled into a full-blown communal clash in Salwa village, Sardhana, late Tuesday night, leaving nine young men injured and the entire area tense.

The trouble had been simmering since Monday, when two groups of youth had argued over catching fish in a local drain. Matters escalated on Tuesday night around 10:30 pm, when Kapil alias Chhotu and Shivam, who were sitting at a local dairy, entered into a heated exchange with youths from another community.

According to the complaint, Asif and his brother allegedly stormed into a house armed with sharp weapons and attacked, injuring several men. Those wounded in the clash include Chhotu, Shivam, Amar Singh, Ravi Kumar, Anil, Rahul, Manjit, and Vineet Chauhan, among others.

As word of the fight spread, villagers from both sides rushed to the spot. What followed was a chaotic scene of stone pelting and clashes with sticks and rods, which quickly spiraled out of control.

Police reinforcements from four police stations arrived on the scene along with SP Dehat, who led the operation to restore calm. A heavy police deployment remains stationed in the village to prevent further escalation.

The injured were initially rushed to the CHC Sardhana, from where eight were referred to Meerut Medical College due to the seriousness of their injuries. Police confirmed that several individuals have been taken into custody and investigations are underway.

Authorities have intensified vigil and patrolling in the village, with officials appealing to residents to maintain peace and not be swayed by rumors.

The incident has once again highlighted how minor disputes can snowball into dangerous communal flashpoints in rural areas, demanding swift and sensitive handling by law enforcement.
