BJP’s Arun Govil Clinches Victory in Meerut Lok Sabha Election 2024

Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – In a fiercely contested election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Meerut Lok Sabha constituency, with Arun Govil securing a significant win. Despite early setbacks in the vote count, Arun Govil won the Meerut seat with a total of 546,469 votes, defeating his closest competitor, Sunita Verma of the Samajwadi Party (SP), who garnered 535,884 votes. The margin of victory was 10,585 votes. The third major candidate, Devvrat Tyagi, secured 87,025 votes.
This election cycle marked a tough battle between BJP’s Arun Govil and SP’s Sunita Verma, but Govil’s perseverance and strategic campaigning paid off, enabling him to surpass Verma in the final tally. The electoral win is significant given the historical context of the constituency.



In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Rajendra Agarwal won the Meerut seat with 586,184 votes, narrowly defeating Haji Mohammad Yaqoob of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) by 4,729 votes. Similarly, in 2014, Rajendra Agarwal secured a resounding victory against BSP’s Mohd Shahid Akhlak with a margin of 232,326 votes, representing 20.86% of the total votes polled. Agarwal also won in the 2009 elections by defeating BSP’s Malook Nagar with a margin of 47,146 votes.
Meerut Constituency: A Diverse and Dynamic Region
The Meerut Lok Sabha constituency spans parts of both Meerut and Hapur districts and is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Meerut is renowned as a bustling trade center in western Uttar Pradesh and is famously known as the “sports city of India” due to its thriving sports goods industry. The region also boasts significant sugar and electronics industries, contributing to its economic vitality.
According to the 2011 census data, Meerut has a population of approximately 3.5 million residents, with a demographic composition of 65% Hindus and 36% Muslims. This diverse population underscores the multifaceted social and cultural fabric of the constituency.
