Biden’s new Covid-19 Response Coordinator – Dr Ashish Jha

Indian-American public health expert Dr. Ashish Jha will take over as US President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 Response Coordinator next month. The White House announced yesterday that President Biden’s COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients and his deputy Natalie Quillian are leaving the administration next month. On Jha’s appointment, President Biden said that as we enter a new moment in the pandemic. Dr Jha is the perfect person to execute the National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan and manage the ongoing risks. Biden said that I commend both Jeff and Dr. Jha for working together to reduce the infection rate and I look forward to continued progress in the coming months.

Who is Dr. Ashish Jha?

Dr Ashish Jha is an expert in disease research and public health policy. Dr Jha is the dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. Ashish Jha received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School in 1997. After this he studied internal medicine at the University of California. In 2004, Jha earned a master’s degree in public health from Harvard T.H. Chan School. Dr. Jha is also a General Internist and Professor of Medicine practicing at Harvard Medical School. Jha recently advised the White House on the national COVID-19 preparedness plan, which was released earlier this month by Ziants and his team.

In a statement released by Brown University, Jha said he was honored by the president’s invitation to join the administration. “To the American people, I promise I will be straightforward and clear in sharing what we know, in explaining what we don’t know and how we will learn more, and what the future will ask of all of us,” Jha said.

He has previously led the Harvard Global Health Institute and has taught at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School. With over 200 empirical papers to his name, his work has largely focussed on improving the US’ healthcare systems. Jha is also widely known for his groundbreaking research on Ebola.

He has previously served as special assistant to the secretary in the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to 2013. He was also a co-chair of an international commission on the global response to the Ebola outbreak.
